GVRA Day at the Fair - Celebrating Life Skills and Employability

October 9, 2024 | Perry, Georgia- Georgia CTI students enjoyed the first-ever GVRA Day at the Fair, a unique initiative designed to help students practice life and employability skills at the Georgia National Fair. Thanks to GVRA’s generous support, all students attended the event with free entry and received $15 in Fair Bucks, allowing them to practice financial literacy skills throughout the day. Students could be seen pooling money to make group purchases or even bargaining with vendors, showcasing skills in budgeting and collaboration.

With Fair passports in hand, students navigated the fairgrounds to complete stamp challenges from GVRA employees, practicing map-reading and exploration. These activities introduced them to potential career paths, including agriculture, Georgia’s largest industry, as well as other career opportunities.

To enhance this experience, Georgia CTI provided students with custom T-shirts, an additional $10 for fair activities, unlimited ride armbands, snack funds for their bus rides, and transportation assistance to and from the fair.

GVRA and Georgia CTI were strongly represented at the fair, engaging with attendees and spreading awareness about services supporting employment for Georgians with disabilities. We are deeply grateful to the Georgia Farm Bureau and the Georgia National Fair for their support. A special thanks to the esteemed panelists: Lauren Goble of the Georgia Farm Bureau, Dr. Keith Howard of Fort Valley State University, and Dr. Andrew Thoron of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. They gave students valuable insights into the connections between classroom learning and real-world career opportunities.
