Georgia CTI Students Engage in Advocacy, Career Readiness, and Financial Literacy at GVRA Day at Fort Valley State University

Peach County, GA – March 24, 2025 — Georgia CTI students recently participated in GVRA Day at Fort Valley State University (FVSU), an impactful event aimed at preparing students with disabilities for life after high school. This year’s event welcomed 80 Georgia CTI students from eight schools across Georgia for a day of interactive workshops, career exploration, and post-secondary education planning.
The event kicked off with an energizing rally featuring a performance by the renowned FVSU Blue Machine Marching Band. The lively performance set the tone for an engaging and dynamic day, filling the venue with excitement and school spirit as students prepared to dive into a series of educational and career-focused activities.
Even before arriving on campus, students were already gaining valuable insights through a financial literacy lesson led by their CTI Coordinators. During the trip to FVSU, students learned about budgeting, saving, and responsible spending habits, providing them with practical financial skills essential for their future independence.

Once on campus, students participated in sessions designed to enhance self-advocacy, workplace readiness, and transition planning. Topics included navigating financial aid, applying for the Bud McCall Scholarship, and leveraging resources for a successful transition from high school to college or the workforce. Students also had the unique opportunity to explore FVSU’s historic campus, gaining insight into the university’s academic programs and student support services.
“GVRA Day is a pivotal event for Georgia students with disabilities as they prepare to step into higher education and the workforce,” said GVRA Executive Director Chris Wells. “Our goal is to not only help them develop important skills for workplace success but also to introduce them to the opportunities that await them at a state college or university. By bringing these elements together in one event, we are giving them the tools they need to thrive in the next phase of their lives.”
Through hands-on learning experiences and meaningful discussions, students left the event with a greater understanding of career pathways, self-advocacy, and the financial and educational resources available to them. GVRA Day continues to play a crucial role in preparing Georgia CTI students for their future by equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed for long-term success.
