Challenged by Choice, Connected as a Team

More than 350 students from over 40 schools across Georgia came together at the FFA/FCCLA Camp September 15–17 for three beautiful—and very warm—days of Emerging Leaders Days.

The event gave students opportunities to strengthen the skills they will need in school, the workplace and their communities.

Ms. Lynsey Singleton of the Georgia Department of Education led a workforce lesson about loyalty in the workplace. Students and advisers role-played situations that challenged them to think beyond the idea that loyalty simply means standing by someone no matter what.

What happens when a colleague or friend asks you to do something you know is wrong? Can you remain loyal while still making the right choice?

Those conversations encouraged students to think critically, communicate confidently and recognize that real loyalty should never require compromising their values.

The learning continued through teambuilding activities. Cornflower Blue challenged students to make decisions with very little information—and then explain why they made those choices. Students also practiced verbal and nonverbal communication skills.

Paparazzi remained a favorite, bringing plenty of laughter while giving teams a fun shared goal.

Of course, the highlight was the Mud Course.

The course asks students to complete difficult physical challenges while navigating sticky, slippery mud. But its purpose goes far beyond getting dirty. Students must communicate, problem-solve and work together to help every member of the team finish.

They offered hands when someone fell, encouraged teammates through the mud and helped one another over high walls. No matter how long it took, everyone crossed the finish line together.

The Mud Course follows the theme “Challenge by Choice.” No student is forced to complete every obstacle, but camp leaders remind participants that choosing not to do something should never come from believing they are incapable. Everyone can participate and contribute in some way.

“I never thought I could do something like this,” one student said.

One adviser even has a Wall of Fame recognizing students who complete the course. The pride on the muddy faces of this year’s students was contagious.

Each day ended with a long, exciting ride down the slip and slide before students and advisers cleaned up and made their tired journey home.

Emerging Leaders Days may leave students muddy and exhausted, but it also leaves them more confident, more connected and ready to challenge what they thought was possible.
